The story is alternately told from the perspective of Noah and Jude, twin siblings; the first tells the story before his mothers death , his sister the period after. The two lines are approaching each other, and it leads to an epos in which the reader get completely sucked in. Brother and sister both want to go to art school, which leads to an unwanted competition. Indirectly, the novel is thus about art as well.
Each time something happens , Noah creates a painting of the situation not only in his head but in the head of the reader as well, at least that was my experience. Briljant.
It's a rollercoaster of complicated family and love relationships; a sister who looses herself in boys and partying, a brother who is an outsider and falls in love with a boy, a mother who is cheating and a father who doesn't talks much. The story includes three love stories, betrayal, remorse and forgiveness.
When a quirky artist appears in the family life, in an unexpected way, he becomes the catalyst. Noah and Jude have to find each other again, they succeed.
It's about not being able to live or to live without each other, about intense pain and sincere love.
It's a compelling story about the period of becoming adult, accompanied by so many new experiences, feelings and choices.
